At the request of the chair of the Therapeutical Goods Administration (TGA) Transparency Review panel, Professor Dennis Pearce, the Parliamentary Secretary for Health and Ageing, Catherine King, has extended the panel’s reporting date to 30 June 2011.
Ms King said this will give the review panel more time to consider all the input received in developing its report and associated recommendations.
“On 16 November last year I announced a comprehensive review of the way in which the TGA communicates its regulatory processes and decisions with a focus on improving its transparency,” Ms King said.
“The purpose of the review was to improve public knowledge of regulatory decision-making and to enhance public understanding of the benefits and risks of therapeutic goods so that the Australian community can understand how the TGA operates and the reasons for its key decisions. It was to report to me in April 2011.
"I understand that the panel has received more than 100 submissions, has also held public meetings in Sydney, Perth and Melbourne and conducted private meetings in a number of cities with many different stakeholders.”
Ms King said she had been advised by Professor Pearce that the submissions contain a wealth of information that warrants careful and detailed consideration.
"This is a large number of submissions and demonstrates the importance of, and interest in, the work of the TGA in regulating therapeutic goods,” Ms King said.
"The transparency of the TGA is important to get right. Information about the TGA and its processes and the decisions makes an important contribution toward improving public health.
"I have, therefore, extended the time for reporting until 30 June and look forward to the receiving the final report," Ms King said.
