Funding for Innovative Health Training Facilities in Central Australia

More doctors, nurses and specialists will be supported in and around Alice Springs as part of the Gillard Labor Government’s health reforms to deliver better health and hospitals for all Australians.
Minister for Indigenous Health and Member for Lingiari, Warren Snowdon, today announced $356,000 to establish a training facility at the Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute in Alice Springs and outfit a mobile consulting and teaching facility for clinical teaching in remote Northern Territory communities.
“This is an innovative initiative because it will provide both fixed and mobile training facilities in the Territory, and create new and innovative opportunities for students to effectively engage in placements in Indigenous health and community settings.
“This investment will allow for increased clinical teaching and training for healthcare professionals and undergraduate and post graduate students undertaking studies in medicine, nursing, midwifery, psychology, dental and physiotherapy,” Mr Snowdon said.
Training opportunities will be offered to a number of tertiary institutions, including the University of Sydney, Flinders University and Charles Darwin University.
The training facility will focus on improving rural and remote health services and the distribution of the health workforce across a number of disciplines and locations.
The University of Sydney will lead the project, and Baker IDI will provide physical space and contribute to the administration of the project and the ongoing maintenance of the building.
The Flinders University NT Rural Clinical School will contribute to the ongoing maintenance of the facilities.
It’s expected the mobile clinic and teaching facility will be completed in February 2011 with training to start in March. The University of Sydney training facility is expected to be completed in Alice Springs by April 2010.
The $356,000 funding is being provided under the Gillard Labor Government’s $90 million Innovative Clinical Teaching and Training Grants program.
The program is part of the Gillard Government’s health reforms and will substantially increase training opportunities to support the long-term sustainability of the nation’s health workforce.
