Government Receives Policy Report
The Minister for Indigenous Health, Warren Snowdon, has received a policy report that addresses disparities in hospital care between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and other Australians with acute coronary syndrome.

The Minister for Indigenous Health, Warren Snowdon, today received a policy report that addresses disparities in hospital care between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and other Australians with acute coronary syndrome.
The report was prepared to advise federal and state governments, hospitals, clinicians and other health professionals of these disparities and to provide a basis for them to work together to address them.
The report, Better hospital care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people experiencing heart attack, was produced by the National Heart Foundation of Australia (NHF) and the Australian Healthcare and Hospitals Association (AHHA).
Mr Snowdon said the health system reforms agreed to at the recent Council of Australian Governments (COAG) meeting provide a number of opportunities to address the recommendations in the report.
“Programs such as the Indigenous Chronic Disease Package are part of the $1.6 billion COAG National Partnership Agreement which includes a number of measures that, in part, address many of the recommendations in the report.
“These include roles for clinical networks, hospital governance, subacute care including cardiac rehabilitation and data collection,” Mr Snowdon said.
The Government will continue to work also with National Heart Foundation of Australia and the Australian Healthcare and Hospitals Association to develop solutions to these issues.
The Australian Government is committed to closing the gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.
