The Minister for Indigenous Health and Rural and Regional Health, Warren Snowdon, today officially opened the new health centre at Tennant Creek.

The Rudd Government provided $3.9 million to the Anyinginyi Health Aboriginal Corporation (AHAC) to assist with its establishment, and the Corporation contributed $768,000.

“The new, larger centre will replace the original health centre, providing increased services in more modern facilities to people in Tennant Creek, the region’s Town camps and remote communities in the Barkly region,” Mr Snowdon said.

“The new health centre in Tennant Creek has the capacity to see more than 60 patients a day, double what was possible at the old health centre,” he said.

The building has capacity for 29 staff members, including GPs, allied health professionals, and administrative staff, and the capacity for health educators.

An increased number of clinic rooms from seven to thirteen will mean clinicians will no longer have to wait to use a free room.

The new facility will specialise in child and maternal health, pathology and allied health services. It has dedicated rooms for sterilisation, clinical storage, administration and information technology.

“Tennant Creek is classified as a very remote area of Australia, so access to a quality medical centre is vital to this community,” Mr Snowdon said.
