National priorities and options for health reform were on the agenda at Bendigo and Kyneton in Victoria today when the Minister for Rural and Regional Health, Warren Snowdon, met local health professionals.

Mr Snowdon toured Bendigo and Kyneton Hospitals, before giving presentations outlining the findings in the National Health and Hospital Commission’s (NHHRC) final report, A Healthier Future for All Australians.

Bendigo and Kyneton are the 92nd and 93rd communities to take part in health reform consultations held across Australia since the release of the Commission’s report in July last year. The report has made extensive recommendations for system-wide changes to Australian health care.

The Government is using the recommendations, together with the draft National Primary Health Care Strategy and the National Preventative Health Strategy, as a basis for direct consultations with the health sector and the Australian public.

The Rudd Government is investing a total of $437,053 in the Bendigo Base Hospital under Stage Two of the Elective Surgery Waiting List Reduction Plan, allowing the hospital to purchase additional surgical equipment to reduce waiting times for elective surgery.

At today’s consultations in Bendigo and Kyneton, Mr Snowdon outlined the NHHRC recommendations to health professionals and discussed their suggestions and priorities for improving the delivery of health services in both the local area and nationally.

“Health matters to all Australians and it is vital that we consult thoroughly on what will be the biggest reform to our health system since Medicare,” Mr Snowdon said.

All Australians can contribute their views on the future of our health, hospitals and aged care systems through the yourhealth website located at www.yourhealth.gov.au
