Local residents and health professionals have teamed up today to share ideas about the best options for a GP Super Clinic in the nation’s capital.
GP Super Clinics are playing a key role in the Gillard Government’s efforts to make it easier for Australians to see and contact a doctor when they need to.
The Minister for Health and Ageing, Nicola Roxon, explained today’s community consultation was designed to ensure the Canberra GP Super Clinic would meet local needs.
“The ACT is a growing community with young families and a chronic GP shortage, that's why the Gillard Government is committed to providing accessible, essential health services through a GP Super Clinic," Ms Roxon said.
“It’s very important that we work closely with the local community to make sure this GP Super Clinic offers the right services for the people of the ACT.”
Joining local Canberra residents today at the consultations were local members Gai Brodtmann and Andrew Leigh.
“Today we heard that too often people in Canberra find it just too hard to find a doctor who actually has the time to help you,” Ms Brodtmann said.
“It’s great to know that Canberra locals will soon have another option to turn to.”
“Those attending today's meeting showed some keen interest in how the Canberra GP Super Clinic would work,” Mr Leigh said.
“Many could see the benefits of being able to see a GP, dietician, nurse practitioner and more all under one roof.”
The information and consultation session outlined general information on the GP Super Clinics program, explained funding processes and provided the community with an opportunity to identify local health needs and service priorities for the GP Super Clinic.
The Australian Government will provide up to $15 million to establish the ACT GP Super Clinic as part of the funding for 28 additional GP Super Clinics provided in the 2010-11 Budget.
