Faster and more effective coordination of patient transport will result from Ambulance Tasmania’s new State Communications Centre and State Headquarters.
Speaking at the opening in Tasmania today, Commonwealth Minister for Health and Ageing Nicola Roxon and Tasmanian Minister for Health Michelle O’Byrne welcomed the centre as a key part of the Tasmanian Patient Transport Initiative.
“Ensuring that all Tasmanians no matter where they live have better access to health services is a key commitment of the Gillard Government,” said Ms Roxon.
“The new centre will enable more effective coordination of patient transport by Tasmania’s emergency, non-emergency and community services including the services of trained and accredited flight paramedics, medical retrieval doctors and other medical staff.”
“We are delighted to be working with the Gillard Government to provide the best level of health care to all Tasmanians,” Ms O’Byrne said.
“This state-of-the-art $5.6 million facility – jointly funded by the Tasmanian and Australian Governments – will play a crucial role in meeting the need for Tasmania’s Ambulance and Health Transport Service to achieve a fully integrated response to calls for transporting patients in all situations.”
The project comes on top of the State Government’s four-year $48 million funding package which is seeing rolling improvements to Ambulance Tasmania throughout the State.
Ms Roxon said the Gillard Government is investing a total of $9.9 million in the Tasmanian Patient Transport Initiative including its contribution to this communications project, fulfilling a 2007 election commitment.
The Transport Initiative will improve patient travel around the state, particularly for those living in the North West of Tasmania.
