The first stage of construction for the new integrated Women’s and Children’s Hospital kicked off today as part of the Royal Hobart Hospital’s redevelopment.

The Commonwealth Minister for Health and Ageing, Nicola Roxon, Tasmanian Premier David Bartlett and Minister for Health, Michelle O’Byrne today welcomed the commencement of preparatory construction work as an important step in the $565 million redevelopment of Royal Hobart Hospital.

“Giving hospitals the resources they need so they are properly funded and sustainable into the future is a key priority for the Gillard Government”, Ms Roxon said.

“We are pleased to have provided the first $50 million of a $100 million contribution to transform the Hospital into a modern, bestpractice health precinct.”

Premier Bartlett said the Tasmanian Government was pleased to be working with the Commonwealth on the first stage of the hospital’s redevelopment.

“We want to increase capacity at Royal Hobart Hospital to ensure it can continue to provide Tasmanians with quality health care well into the future”, Mr Bartlett said.

Minister O’Byrne said the $180 million integrated Women’s and Children’s Hospital will be a modern, best practice facility for the benefit of all Tasmanians.

“The Commonwealth has immediately provided $100 million to help progress the redevelopment and agreed the remaining $240 million will be delivered from the Health and Hospitals Fund (HHF) regional priority round subject to the application meeting the eligibility criteria of the independent HHF board.”

Ms O’Byrne said, “The State Government has already committed $100 million to the redevelopment of the Royal and we are getting on with the job.”

Minister Roxon, Premier Bartlett and Minister O’Byrne were accompanied by Federal Member for Franklin, Julie Collins and Federal Member for Denison Andrew Wilkie.
