The Minister for Health and Ageing, Nicola Roxon, today welcomed the appointment of David Kalisch as the new Director of the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW).
“Mr Kalisch will be an asset to the Institute and play a key leadership role into the future.
“Having served as a full-time Commissioner at the Productivity Commission and as Deputy Secretary at the Department of Health and Ageing for the three years prior to that, Mr Kalisch brings a wealth of experience to the AIHW.
“Mr Kalisch has a deep understanding of the relevance of reliable data to policy development and brings extensive senior executive experience in health and welfare issues to the table,” Ms Roxon said.
An economist with wide experience across a range of social policy issues, Mr Kalisch has also worked as a consultant to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development and has held positions on boards including those of the AIHW, the Australian Institute of Family Studies and the National Blood Authority.
The Minister thanked the outgoing Director, Ms Penny Allbon for her service to the Institute over the past four years.
“Dr Allbon has brought commitment and energy to the position at a time of significant change.
“Dr Allbon was particularly instrumental in developing national performance indicators for the COAG health reform process, and she led the Institute through its very rapid and major expansion in support of this work.
“I have enjoyed working with Penny and wish her well in her future pursuits.”
Mr Kalisch will formally assume the role of Director of the AIHW on 15 December 2010.
The AIHW is a national agency that provides information on Australia's health and welfare, through statistics and data development that informs discussion and decisions on policy and services.
