The Department of Health and Ageing is now seeking organisations or consortia to manage the Healthy Communities Quality Framework registration process and information portal.

The framework will provide an essential safeguard in ensuring that programs and providers that deliver the initiative meet quality standards and requirements.

“Keeping healthy and out of hospital is a key focus for the Gillard Government – and the reason we are supporting local initiatives as well as world leading action against big tobacco companies”, Minister Roxon said.

“The next step being taken today means that all Australians will be able to search online through an information portal for local programs or services provided through the Healthy Communities Initiative.”

“After the appointment of the registration body has been made, healthy-lifestyle programs and provider organisations will be able to apply to be registered under the framework.”

The $71.8 million Healthy Communities Initiative is funded from the Gillard Government’s $872 million record investment on preventive health under the National Partnership Agreement.

“We know that preventive health measures work, that’s why we are encouraging all Australian’s to get active, eat well and adopt healthier lifestyles,” Ms Roxon said.

$23 million is currently on offer to Local Governments across the country to run innovative healthy lifestyle programs that have a focus on supporting adults who are not in the paid workforce, as part of the 2nd round of the Healthy Communities Initiative. Further initiatives focus on workplaces and children.

The current application round for Healthy Communities grants will close on 4 February 2011 and information is available at: www.healthyactive.gov.au.

Further information regarding the registration process and information portal is at www.health.gov.au/tenders. Applications must be received by 21 January 2011.
