The Minister for Health and Ageing, Nicola Roxon, today welcomed the appointments of three new members to the Private Health Insurance Administration Council (PHIAC).

Ms Lynn Ralph will lead the Council as the new Commissioner alongside new members Mr John Barrington and Mr Terence Downing.

“PHIAC plays a key role in the Government’s continuing commitment to protect the interests of the 10 million private health insurance consumers”, Ms Roxon said.

“Ms Ralph will be an asset to the Council and provide strong leadership over the next three years.”

“Having served as deputy chair of the Australian Securities Commission (now ASIC) and as CEO of the Investment and Financial Services Association, Ms Ralph brings a wealth of experience in regulation and governance to the Council.”

“Mr Barrington comes to the Council after more than 20 years in the insurance sector with extensive experience in law and commerce as a chief executive and board member of several major organisations.”

“Mr Downing is currently deputy chair of Integral Energy and a member of the NSW Workers Compensation Insurance Fund Investment Board. He has held non-executive and executive director, senior executive and management consultancy roles within the insurance sector for more than 30 years.”

The Minister also thanked outgoing Commission Mr James Dominguez AM, Deputy Commissioner Peter Annand, and Board Member Sue Carter for their service on the Commission.

Private health insurance coverage continues to grow under Labor, with the proportion of Australians with private hospital insurance increasing to 44.8% at the end of the September quarter, the highest rate since March 2001.

PHIAC is an independent statutory authority, which regulates the private health insurance Industry. The three-year appointments commence on 29 November 2010.
