Over three-quarters of all Australians (76%) support the Gillard Government’s historic health reform agenda according to new statistics released today.

The Menzies-Nous Australian Health Survey reports that Australians have a very positive view of their own health and are confident they will receive the best quality care.

The Minister for Health and Ageing, Nicola Roxon, welcomed the results as further evidence that the Government’s health reform agenda has widespread support.

“After over a decade of neglect and mismanagement by the Liberals, Labor took on the task of building a better funded, better run and more sustainable health system,” Ms Roxon explained.

“I welcome that 76% of Australians support Labor’s health reforms.”

“Australians can see that we are delivering on health reform.”

“We have delivered over 70,000 elective surgery operations, over 250,000 GP Super Clinic services and almost one million Teen Dental Services.”

Responding to the survey findings that consumers are concerned about cost-of-living pressures, Minister Roxon highlighted some of the steps the Gillard Government was taking to reduce the cost burden of health care on Australian families.

“Our investments into public hospitals are strengthening our public system and making our system of universal Medicare coverage sustainable,” Ms Roxon said.

“We’re also training 5,500 more GPs and 680 more specialists. This means there will be an adequate supply of health professionals to help maintain high bulk billing rates.”
