Children at 42 schools around the country will be growing, harvesting, preparing and sharing fresh food and learning healthy eating habits as part of the latest round of the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden National Program announced today.

Each school that has been accepted into the program will receive up to $60,000 each to help to develop their own school kitchen garden.

The Minister for Health and Ageing, Nicola Roxon, explained the program aims to improve nutrition and develop life-long healthy eating habits for children as a part of the Australian Government’s commitment to preventative health.

“We know that preventative health programs work, and that’s why Labor is investing $872 million into preventative health—the largest single investment ever of its kind,” Ms Roxon said.

“The Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden National Program is already having an impact in 88 schools around the country, and it’s great to see another 42 schools can now get started building their school kitchen gardens.”

“When children develop healthy eating habits early in life, they have a better chance to avoid lifestyle-related chronic conditions such as diabetes and heart disease.”

The program was founded by culinary expert Stephanie Alexander and is now supported by the Australian Government through a $12.8 million investment over four years to implement the program in up to 190 schools nation-wide.

This funding round builds on the success of the first two rounds which were announced in January and December of 2009. The Government also recently announced $1 million over three years to develop curriculum resources to support the program.

A list of grant recipients under this round of funding is attached.
