Diabetes patients received good news on two fronts today from the Gillard Government with the launch of the National Gestational Diabetes Register and the announcement of the Government’s intention to continue the current arrangements with Diabetes Australia on the National Diabetes Services Scheme (NDSS).

Minister for Health and Ageing, Nicola Roxon told the National Diabetes Policy Forum today that the National Gestational Diabetes Register will be a valuable tool in providing longer term care for women with gestational diabetes.

“The register will enable Diabetes Australia to contact these women and remind them of the need for regular type 2 diabetes screening,” Ms Roxon said.

“While gestational diabetes is short-term and usually disappears after the baby is born, it can recur in subsequent pregnancies and be a marker of increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in life.”

“The register will also provide a single source of data about gestational diabetes, which will assist researchers and health professionals across the country in the development of future policies and services for women with gestational diabetes.”

Ms Roxon also took the opportunity at the Forum to announce that the Government intends to begin negotiations to renew current arrangements with Diabetes Australia in administering the National Diabetes Services Scheme (NDSS).

Diabetes Australia plays a critical role in administering the NDSS in partnership with its state and territory organisations.

The Gillard Government provides more than $400 million a year to Diabetes Australia to deliver the NDSS and for medicines for diabetes through the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme.
