Anaesthetic training opportunities for rural and remote GPs
Increased funding for maternity training for doctors will enable general practitioners to complete procedural training in obstetrics and anaesthetics.

The Gillard Government is getting on with the job of delivering more obstetric and anaesthetic services in rural and remote areas.
Increased funding for maternity training for doctors will enable general practitioners to complete procedural training in obstetrics and anaesthetics.
The Minister for Health and Ageing, Nicola Roxon, explained that the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM) has been selected to manage the anaesthetic component of the program until 2013.
“The ACRRM is currently seeking applications from rural and remote general practitioners to participate in the anaesthetic training offered by the program,” Ms Roxon said.
“This anaesthetic training for GPs is an important part of the Australian Government’s efforts to improve obstetric and anaesthetic services in rural and remote areas.”
General practitioners can apply to the ACRRM through their current application round, which will close on 7 December 2010. Information on how to apply is available at: www.acrrm.org.au/gpptsp
This $5 million funding, announced in the 2009–10 Federal Budget, is in response to the Government’s Maternity Services Review report that found there was a need to improve the choices available to pregnant women, including better access to high quality maternity services and more support for the maternity services workforce.
By June 2013, 110 general practitioners in rural and remote areas will each receive $40,000 (GST exclusive) to attain either:
- the Advanced Diploma of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists; or
- a statement of satisfactory completion of Advanced Rural Skills Training in Anaesthesia.
Details on the application round for the obstetric component were announced on
15 October 2010 and the application round closed on 1 November 2010.
These initiatives form part of the Government’s ongoing commitment to provide more access to health services for people living in rural and remote regions of Australia.
