Following on from Wednesday’s landmark decision by the Parliament to establish the Australian National Preventive Health Agency, the Gillard Government is calling on local governments around Australia to apply for more than $23 million worth of Healthy Communities Grants.
The Minister for Health and Ageing, Nicola Roxon, today called for grant applications for innovative community based programs that encourage and support people to adopt and sustain healthier lifestyles.
“We know that preventative health measures work, that’s why we are encouraging all Australian’s to get active, eat well and adopt healthier lifestyles,” Ms Roxon said.
“$23 million is on offer to Local Governments across the country to run innovative healthy lifestyle programs that have a focus on supporting adults who are not in the paid workforce.”
“Potentially avoidable diseases account for around 20 per cent of Australia’s total health care expenditure and with more than 60 per cent of Australians aged over 18 either overweight or obese, there has never been a more important time to tackle preventable diseases,” Ms Roxon said.
Local Governments, consortia of Local Governments and established regional organisations of councils can apply through the current application round which will close on 4 February 2011. Information on how to apply will be available at: www.healthyactive.gov.au.
Round 2 grant recipients will join an existing group of 12 pilot Local Governments who are already delivering innovative programs tailored to meet their communities’ needs.
The $71.8 million Healthy Communities program is funded from the Gillard Government’s $872 million record investment in preventative heath under the National Partnership Agreement. Further applications for the Healthy Communities initiative will be invited in the second half of next year.
