The Australian Government today announced the first stage in the delivery of GP Super Clinics, as promised during the 2010 election campaign.
Minister for Health and Ageing Nicola Roxon said the Government today started the process of delivering 28 new GP Super Clinics to local communities around Australia, an extra $233m investment in primary healthcare.
“Having written to affected local members – both Government and non-government – discussing the proposed GP Super Clinic in their region and asking for feedback on a clinic being developed in their community, I received a number of responses supporting the development of local GP Super Clinics, asking for work to commence as soon as possible.
“Today, I am announcing that the Department of Health and Ageing will commence an Invitation to Apply (ITA) process in 11 communities. The ITA process will commence on 6 November, with advertisements to appear in local and national papers.
“I received responses from some members asking for local consultation processes to occur, ensuring each region has the opportunity to shape their new GP Super Clinic and tailor it to meet the needs of each community.
“I have acted on the wishes of local members and asked my department to commence consultations in 13 communities. Consultations will begin over the coming months and continue into early 2011,” Minister Roxon said.
In addition, four communities have already identified an operator who is ready to proceed directly with a GP Super Clinic. My department is contacting these operators to finalise planning and funding arrangements.
GP Super Clinics are a key element of the Australian Government’s strategy to build a stronger primary health care system, having already provided over 250,000 services across the country.
26 Clinics are currently either operational, offering early services or under construction around Australia.
These clinics will bring together general practitioners, practice nurses, visiting medical specialists, allied health professionals and other health care providers to deliver integrated multi-disciplinary, primary health care services aimed at addressing the health care needs and priorities of local communities. Importantly, clinics can play a role in training the next generation of health professionals.
