11 September 2010

I am pleased and honoured to continue to lead the Government's ambitious health reform agenda to deliver better health services for all Australians.

Following a very busy first term introducing health reform - I now look forward to implementing changes that will deliver better health and hospital services across the country. In particular, I will focus on the better delivery of health services through improved GP clinics, modernised hospitals, an expanded medical and nursing workforce, better after hours services and unleashing the benefits of e-health and telemedicine.

I thank both Warren Snowdon and Justine Elliot for their hard work and invaluable contribution to the Health Portfolio and the reform process. I welcome the appointment of Mark Butler to the new Ministry of Mental Health and Ageing and Catherine King as Parliamentary Secretary for Health.

The health team will continue to oversee the delivery of vital health services to the community - and will have a strong focus on implementing existing, agreed reforms, ensuring their benefits to the whole country, as well as shaping an important second term health agenda in aged care, mental health and dental services.

I look forward to continuing my close work with doctors, nurses and the allied health professions whether they work in primary care, indigenous health services, research or our hospitals, both in city and country areas.

Our vast system has many strengths - the best of all being the people that work in it. I have enormous confidence that, together, we now have a rare opportunity to really make a difference to improve health outcomes for all Australians.

I look forward to getting back to work with my new team and my capable Department to create the health system Australians need and deserve for the future.
