The establishment of the Wanneroo GP Super Clinic moved closer today with the review of concept plans by the Minister for Health and Ageing, Nicola Roxon.
The new clinic is to be built on a site on Dundebar Road, Wanneroo by Edith Cowan University.
Edith Cowan University is in discussions with the City of Wanneroo and the North Metro Area Health Service about detailed arrangements and services for the Wanneroo GP Super Clinic.
Wanneroo’s GP Super Clinic, which is being jointly funded by the Western Australian Government, will deliver additional health services to the area, taking pressure off the Joondalup Health Campus, and ensure local families can get the health care they need.
The new clinic will offer general practitioners, nurses, allied health services (including psychologists, midwives, speech pathologists, occupational therapists and Aboriginal Health Workers) and a visiting specialist pediatrician working together in multidisciplinary teams.
The new facility will open for extended hours and have a large treatment area with ambulance access. Bulk billing will be available to concession card holders, pensioners and children aged under 16 years. Bulk-billing services will also be available for all Medicare Chronic Disease Management items including Medicare allied health services.
The clinic will play an important role in strengthening the future primary care workforce, with extensive facilities for medical, nursing and allied health students training alongside each other.
There are now 22 GP Super Clinics either in operation, providing early services or under construction across the country.
The GP Super Clinic program is a five-year, $275.2 million commitment to improving primary care.
This year’s Budget provided funds for a further 23 GP Super Clinics and an expansion of around 425 existing primary care facilities to invest in expanding primary care across the country.
GP Super Clinics are a part of the Government’s response to the National Health and Hospitals Reform Commission’s recommendation for the creation of multi-disciplinary primary health care centres providing primary and specialist services in one location, and open for extended hours.
