13 July 2010More doctors, nurses and allied health professionals are set to be supported in Adelaide’s northern suburbs as part of the Australian Governments health reforms to deliver better health and hospitals for Australians.
Health Minister Nicola Roxon and Member for Wakefield Nick Champion announced today $4.6 million support for Adelaide Unicare to purchase land next to the Playford North GP Super Clinic for a new two-storey teaching and training facility.
The Minister for Health and Ageing, Nicola Roxon, said that the new teaching and training facility would incorporate eight multidisciplinary teaching and consulting rooms, a dedicated student study area, library, lecture theatre and meeting room, student amenities areas and a lifestyle training and resource centre.
Minister Roxon said, “It will work collaboratively with the Playford North GP Super Clinic to increase capacity for teaching and training through the co-location of students, registrars, GPs, nurses, mental health and allied health care professionals.”
The announcement was made at the turning of the first sod for the Playford North GP Super Clinic to be located at Curtis Road, Munno Para, in the growing Playford North community.
Member for Wakefield Nick Champion said that this development of a comprehensive health facility for the northern suburbs would be welcomed by families constructing homes in the local community.
Mr Champion said, “The GP Super Clinic will provide one-stop primary health care to this growing area in Adelaide’s north.
“It will provide integrated health care services that help tackle the health needs and priorities of our local community, including chronic disease management, mental health, early intervention services and health promotion.
“The clinic will accommodate general practitioners, nurses, visiting specialists and a variety of allied health professions in areas such as physiotherapy, mental health, exercise therapy, nutritional advice, occupation therapy and drug and alcohol counselling.
“Preventive and lifestyle programs at the clinic will include weight loss, anti-smoking, home health assessments, women's health, sexual health, diabetes, asthma, ante-natal care and baby health checks. Services and programs will cater for the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People and the clinic intends to employ an Aboriginal Health Officer,” said Mr Champion.
Minister Roxon said, “Both these investments in Adelaide’s northern suburbs are part of the Australian Government’s health reforms and will increase substantially the number of training opportunities to support the long-term sustainability of the nation’s health workforce.”
“This brings the total investment by the Australian Government for the Playford North health complex to $12.1m with the GP Super Clinic receiving $7.5m and the new teaching and training facility $4.6m. The GP Super Clinic is expected to commence services from the first half of next year and the teaching and training facility from early 2012,” said Minister Roxon.
Funding for a further 23 GP Super Clinics was announced in the recent federal Budget with an investment of $355.2m that will also support upgrades through Primary Health Care Infrastructure Grants to around 425 general practices, primary care and community health services, and Aboriginal Medical Services. A funding round for Primary Health Care Infrastructure Grants is now open with details available on the department’s tenders and grants website at www.health.gov.au/tenders
The additional GP Super Clinics are part of the Government’s response to the National Health and Hospitals Reform Commission’s recommendation for the creation of multi-disciplinary primary health care centres providing primary and specialist services in one location, and open for extended hours.
