The Government will provide an additional $2.5 million for the Wallan GP Super Clinic, making a total of $3.5 million and a further $2.5 million for the Mt Isa GP Super Clinic, making a total of $5 million.
This follows extensive community feedback about special needs and circumstances in both areas.
The additional funding for the Wallan GP Super Clinic will be allocated to a joint consortium of Mitchell Community Health Service and the Central Highlands General Practice Network. This coincides with a commitment by Mitchell Shire Council to investigate the possibility of acquiring a suitable site for the clinic in Wallan.
The increased funding will allow Mitchell Community Health Service to construct a larger facility than originally proposed and offer a more comprehensive range of services to this growing community.
It is anticipated that the facility will offer increased GP and allied health services including diabetes support, dietetics, physiotherapy and occupational therapy. In addition to generalist GP services, the clinic will deliver specialist paediatric and adolescent health services.
All of these services will be provided through a one-stop integrated, multidisciplinary primary care service which is able to respond to a growing population and the increasing incidence of chronic disease conditions.
The Wallan GP Super Clinic will also support the future primary care workforce by providing high-quality education, training opportunities and facilities.
The additional funding for the Mt Isa GP Super Clinic will assist with the securing land or a property in Mt Isa. The Australian Government will open a tender process to find a suitable operator of the Mt Isa GP Super Clinic.
The GP Super Clinic program is a five-year, $275 million initiative to improve access to quality health care in communities and is significant investment in taking the pressure off our hospitals.
There are now 21 sites where services are either being provided or construction is under way across the Australian community.
This year’s Budget provided funds for a further 23 GP Super Clinics and an expansion of around 425 existing primary care facilities to invest in expanding primary care across the country.
GP Super Clinics are a part of the Government’s response to the National Health and Hospitals Reform Commission’s recommendation for the creation of multi-disciplinary primary health care centres providing primary and specialist services in one location, and open for extended hours.
