The units will enable cancer patients and their carers, who have travelled to the ACT for treatment, to stay at the hospital while receiving treatment. This will particularly benefit families across South-East NSW.
Five new units will be constructed; two single units and three twin units, all with ensuite, kitchenette and lounge/dinning room facilities.
Common areas proposed for inclusion include play area, meeting room and laundry.
This funding builds on the Rudd Government's commitment of $27.9m for the first stage of the Capital Region Cancer Centre, a new building with multidisciplinary clinics and clinical research facilities in Canberra.
The funding for both projects comes from the Rudd Government's $560 million Regional Cancer Centre initiative.
While Australia has better overall cancer survival rates than comparable countries, there is still unacceptable variation for some people, depending on the type of cancer, a person's socioeconomic status, or where they live.
It is of great concern that for the 30 per cent of Australians living in rural and remote areas, outcomes for some types of cancer are worse than for people living in the city.
When I become the Health Minister I was shocked at these statistics, health outcomes shouldn't depend on where you live or how much money you have.
Investment in regional cancer centres will help improve these outcomes and provide better services to people in the ACT and across South-East NSW.
A network of regional cancer centres that expands services and links with specialised cancer centres in metropolitan areas will better support and service all Australians and help close the gap in cancer outcomes between urban and regional Australians.
