The Rudd Labor Government will provide $1.8 million to expand the Great Lakes Aquatic and Leisure Centre in Forster in New South Wales.

Nicola Roxon, Minister for Health and Ageing made the announcement at the centre today with Great Lakes Council mayor, Cr Jan McWilliams.

Anthony Albanese, Minister for Infrastructure, Regional Development and Local Government said that the project was expected to support 14 jobs during construction, as well as three post-construction jobs.

“The Great Lakes Aquatic and Leisure Centre upgrade is worth almost $2 million. It will create jobs over the short term, while delivering lasting benefits for residents and for the hundreds of thousands of tourists to the region,” he said.

Ms Roxon said she was pleased to announce funding for such a great local project.

“The improved Centre will provide a range of sporting activities in a modern, purpose-built venue for all ages.

“For example, it will provide dedicated spaces for the Kindi-Gym, as well as health and rehabilitation programs for seniors and people with injuries or disabilities,” she said.

The Great Lakes Council project will extend the existing indoor sports court and is expected to include:
  • Construction of a new netball/basketball court, gymnastics area, boxing area, car park, multipurpose room and four sports bays;
  • Demolition of the existing stage area;
  • Installation of a new elevator to improve access; and
  • Installation of sustainable technologies such as 10kw capacity solar panels, three 4,500 litre rainwater tanks, a watering system and energy efficient lighting.
Mr Albanese said that the funding was part of the Government’s Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Program, which is delivering a record $1 billion for nearly 5,000 projects across the nation.

“Across Australia, we are building and modernising community facilities in partnership with local government,” he concluded.
