Port Stephens GP Super Clinic Officially Opened
The Minister for Health and Ageing, Nicola Roxon, has officially opened the $2.5 million Port Stephens GP Super Clinic – to be known as the Nelson Plaza Clinic.

The Minister for Health and Ageing, Nicola Roxon, today officially opened the $2.5 million Port Stephens GP Super Clinic – to be known as the Nelson Plaza Clinic.
The clinic will have extended hours of operation, including Sundays and a dedicated service on Tuesday and Thursday mornings for residents in local aged care facilities.
Ms Roxon also announced today that the clinic will receive a $100,000 after-hours grant – ensuring people who need a doctor after-hours can access one.
Four new GPs, two of whom are female, two full-time registered nurses and a wide variety of allied health professionals will staff the new clinic.
The medical professionals at the clinic will work in multi-disciplinary teams to provide integrated, patient-centred care. The clinic will focus on providing preventative and chronic disease management services, in particular for diabetes and obesity.
The Port Stephens GP Super Clinic will bulk bill all concession card holders, children under 16, patients with a chronic disease who are participating in their chronic disease programs, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, all preventative care Medical Benefit Scheme items such as skin cancer checks and for biopsies and procedures.
The Clinic will also be involved in training the future health workforce with GP registrars beginning in July. It will also supervise the training of a nurse practitioner. Arrangements for medical students to gain experience at the clinic in the first semester of 2011 are well advanced.
Eight more GP Super Clinics will be built in NSW, taking their place in a network of 36 at various locations around the country, announced in 2007 as part of a five-year, $275 million project.
A further 23 GP Super Clinics will be constructed around Australia, and around 425 existing primary care facilities will be eligible for grants to upgrade their clinic, after $355.2 million was announced in last weeks Budget.
The Port Stephens GP Super Clinic opened its doors on 3 May, almost six months ahead of schedule.
