7 May 2010Construction work on the $5m Redcliffe GP Super Clinic kicked off today with the first sod turned by Minister for Health and Ageing, Nicola Roxon and Member for Petrie, Yvette D’Ath.
To be known locally as the Moreton Bay Integrated Care Centre, this modern purpose-built facility will be located on the grounds of Redcliffe Hospital.
The facility will bring together GPs, practice nurses, allied health professionals and specialists.
The Moreton Bay Integrated Care Centre is being established by the Redcliffe Hospital Foundation and the University of Queensland. It will provide two streams of care:
- an acute care service to take pressure off the Redcliffe Hospital Emergency Department
- a chronic disease management service to tackle the burden of chronic disease in Redcliffe with GPs and allied health workers delivering team-based patient centred care.
The Minister for Health and Ageing, Ms Roxon said the Redcliffe GP Super Clinic was essential infrastructure in an area with a rapidly rising population, a growing proportion of retirees and a seasonal influx of tourists.
Ms Roxon said, “A GP Super Clinic, with health professionals working in multi-disciplinary teams, providing patients with team-based, integrated Patient-centred care, is part of the answer.
“The start of work today here in Redcliffe means there are 18 clinics currently under-construction across the country and in nearby Strathpine the GP Super Clinic there is providing a very valuable service to that community – with over 5,000 patient visits since opening its doors in February,” said Ms Roxon.
Member for Petrie, Mrs D’Ath said that getting on with construction would be welcomed by local residents on the peninsula.
Mrs D’Ath said, “Residents asked for better health services before the last election and I’m pleased this service is coming closer to reality with today’s sod turning.
“The Redcliffe GP Super Clinic will be a modern, purpose-built facility, highly accessible, and well served by after-hours services up to 10pm seven days a week, Mrs D’Ath said.
“This service will take pressure off the emergency department at Redcliffe Hospital through providing extended hours of GP services for residents living on the peninsula and it will create many construction jobs over the coming months.”
The Redcliffe GP Super Clinic sill provide services specific to the needs of local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as well as people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
