The Hon Nicola Roxon MP
Minister for Health and Ageing
Amanda Rishworth MP
Member for Kingston
1 April 2010The Rudd Government today provided a timely boost to the future of health in South Australia.
$10 million will be provided to support additional clinical training places for students at local universities - which will encourage more health students to study and work in South Australia.
Flinders University, University of Adelaide and University of South Australia will share in an additional $10 million in funding for South Australia under the Rudd Government’s Increased Clinical Training Capacity grants.
This funding will support approximately 740 additional clinical training placements for students currently enrolled in medicine, nursing, optometry, physiotherapy, social work, dentistry, podiatry and a number of other disciplines. The placement opportunities will be provided in practices throughout South Australia.
Many of these clinical placements use a variety of community and private settings not traditionally used for this type of training. Students will benefit from new supervision and mentoring mechanisms and will get to experience work in team-based training.
The Rudd Government is providing up to $67.5 million in Increased Clinical Training Capacity grants for 65 projects across Australia.
The South Australian grants will fund opportunities ranging from dental students in an inner city homeless shelter in Adelaide through to supporting paramedic placements in rural areas.
Minister Roxon made the announcement whilst officially opening Flinders University’s new 250-seat, $6.5 million health lecture theatre and tutorial rooms.
The new lecture theatre delivers on a $10 million election commitment from the Rudd Government to help the University’s School of Medicine upgrade its teaching facilities and to create new facilities at the Repatriation Hospital and Noarlunga Health Services.
Providing high-quality clinical training opportunities in diverse settings will help attract more students to learn and work across the private, public and not for profit health sectors in Australia.
This in turn means more Australians will get better access to appropriate health care, regardless of their location.
The projects are part of the Rudd Government’s strategy to work with organisations involved in providing clinical training to build training capacity and enhance the long-term sustainability of the health workforce.
The projects will provide a boost to the availability of clinical training and will help ensure that students undertaking health professional studies have access to top-quality facilities and the clinical training necessary to complete their qualification.
The Rudd Government is building a health workforce to meet the needs of all Australians, into the future.
A key plank in the Rudd Government’s health reform plans are to invest $632 million to train a record number of doctors - to tackle doctor shortages, expand capacity and deliver better health and better hospitals.
