The Prime Minister and Minister for Health and Ageing today toured Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital (RBWH) to view first hand the result of Commonwealth investment in the health service.
The Rudd Government provided $5.1 million for two new high-tech operating rooms that provide enhanced capacity to treat complex surgical patients at the RBWH.
One of the new operating theatres will serve as a dedicated “hybrid” theatre to be used for complex vascular surgery and trauma patients requiring dedicated imaging at the time of their operations and procedures.
The second theatre will be used primarily as an integrated theatre, specialising in laparoscopic surgery and allowing interactive teaching opportunities to take place both within and outside of the hospital.
This investment is part of the Rudd Government’s $29.4 million investment in Queensland for capital infrastructure projects, including new operating theatres, and the purchase of surgical equipment which means more elective surgeries for more Queenslanders.
These investments are part of the Rudd Government’s commitment to delivering better health services and better hospitals.
Yesterday the Prime Minister announced plans to establish a National Health and Hospitals Network, in the largest reforms to Australia’s health and hospital system since the introduction of Medicare.
The National Health and Hospitals Network will bring together eight separate State and Territory systems with one set of tough national standards to drive and deliver better hospital services – whether you are in Brisbane, Darwin, Dubbo or Bunbury.
This new national network will be funded federally and run locally.
