Joint Release

The Hon Nicola Roxon MP
Minister for Health and Ageing

Yvette D’Arth MP
Member for Petrie

8 January 2010

The Redcliffe GP Super Clinic to be built on the grounds of the Redcliffe Hospital is being planned to ensure more support for people with chronic disease who live in and around Redcliffe.

The GP Super Clinic and local hospital services in Redcliffe were discussed today when the Minister for Health and Ageing, Nicola Roxon, and the Member for Petrie, Yvette D’Ath, met local health professionals for the 85th consultation to road-test the National Health and Hospitals Reform Commission's proposed reforms.

The Redcliffe GP Super Clinic is designed to house multidisciplinary teams of health professionals to boost healthcare and help address the increasing levels of chronic disease in Redcliffe.

Construction of the clinic, funded by the Rudd Government and from the Redcliffe Hospital Foundation, is on track to start in the first half of this year – with the clinic due to open for business next year.

The Redcliffe GP Super Clinic has been planned to deliver two streams of care: an acute care service to help take pressure off the Redcliffe Hospital Emergency Department; and a multidisciplinary chronic disease management service.

The Redcliffe Hospital Foundation, working together with the University of Queensland, will provide education and training for South Eastern Queensland’s future health workforce. It will provide placements for GP registrars, as well as medical, nursing and allied health students.

Following the signing of a contract between the Redcliffe Hospital Foundation and Queensland Health for the purchase of the land earlier this year, work has been progressing well and approval of the clinic’s Development Application is now pending.

Minister Roxon talked with medical professionals at Redcliffe Hospital today as part of the Rudd Government’s community meetings to discuss improving the health care system.

The National Health and Hospitals Reform Commission report made recommendations for system-wide changes to Australian health care.

At today’s Redcliffe Hospital consultation, Minister Roxon outlined the Commission’s recommendations and had a roundtable discussion with local health professionals to discuss their priorities to improve health services in their community and around the country.

All Australians are also able to contribute to the national debate on our health system via the yourHealth.gov.au website – and full copies of the reports can be found there.
