The Australian Government has imposed a sanction on the Lions Club of Sunbury Elderly Peoples Homes Inc, an aged care provider in Melbourne.
The Department of Health and Ageing imposed the sanction last night (6 January 2010) following unsatisfactory action by the provider to address areas of concern identified late last year by the independent Aged Care Standards and Accreditation Agency.
The Accreditation Agency found that there was non-compliance with the Aged Care Act 1997 including:
- A lack of systems and processes to guide staff practices in providing care and services to residents;
- Information systems not supporting appropriate care planning and identification of residents’ needs; and
- A failure to implement improvements in processes and procedures across a range of areas.
The sanction imposed requires the provider to appoint an adviser with nursing experience (approved by the Commonwealth) for a period of six months to help the facility comply with its responsibilities
The Accreditation Agency and the Department of Health and Ageing will continue to monitor the nursing home closely.
Minister Roxon said: “When aged care providers fail to meet their responsibilities the Government will act to protect our frail and elderly citizens.
“This Government is committed to continuing to work in partnership with older Australians, their families, staff, unions and providers to improve the quality of aged care in Australia,” Minister Roxon said.
The majority of residential aged care services provide high quality care to their residents.
Nationally, there are five nursing homes under sanction of the nearly 2800 aged care homes.
Anyone with concerns about an aged care facility should contact the Aged Care Complaints Investigation Scheme on 1 800 550 552.
