South Australia's Social Inclusion Commissioner Monsignor David Cappo has been appointed as Deputy Chair to the National Advisory Council on Mental Health (NACMH) - a key strategic group providing specialist policy advice on mental health to the Federal Government.
Minister for Mental Health and Ageing Mark Butler will chair NACMH and welcomed Monsignor Cappo’s appointment as Deputy Chair and said that the Monsignor will bring wide ranging experience to the policy challenges in mental health.
“I believe that the council will benefit greatly from Monsignor Cappo’s leadership and experience in social policy development and social inclusion in formulating advice on strategies to improve mental health care in Australia.
“The Gillard Labor Government has indicated that mental health reform is a key priority for its second term. The NACMH will continue to have an important role in advising the Australian Government on how to achieve sustainable and effective changes in the mental health system both now and into the future,” he said.
Mr Butler said that the NACMH was established in 2008 by the Federal Government and has been a key source of advice in the development of mental health policy and reflecting the broad views of the Australian community in the important area.
“The objective of the council is to provide timely, expert, balanced and confidential advice to Government on mental health issues. It has a membership of 14 eminent Australians with particular expertise and experience in mental health.
“We are committed to an effective mental health system across Australia and the appointment of Monsignor David Cappo as Deputy Chair of NACMH is a significant achievement for the council and for all Australians affected by mental ill health.
