16 December 2010Minister for Mental Health and Ageing Mark Butler today announced $1.7 million to upgrade and extend the Galiwin’ku Aged Care Service on Elcho Island in the Northern Territory.
Mr Butler said the funding will also be used to construct new staff accommodation, and deliver improved, culturally-inclusive aged care services to older Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people serviced by the in East Arnhem Land.
“There is strong evidence that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living in remote communities experience social and economic disadvantage. It is imperative therefore, that we provide them with access to quality care services.”
Mr Butler said that under a Remote Service Delivery National Partnership (RSDNP) agreed to by the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) in November 2008, funding of $291.2 million over six years would be committed to improve and coordinate the delivery of services in 29 priority Remote Service Delivery Communities throughout Australia, including Galiwin’ku.
“Through the COAG agreement, the Gillard Labor Government, the states and the Northern Territory have been working together with Indigenous communities to improve Indigenous access to Government services,” he said.
The Minister for Indigenous Health, and Member for Lingiari, Warren Snowdon, said the funding announced today will be welcome on Elcho Island.
“The $1.7 m upgrade to the Galiwin’ku Aged Care Service will greatly assist the older members of the Galawin’ku community and their families, by improving their access to high quality care services.
”This funding follows an announcement earlier this week that Ngalkanbuy Health Centre, Galiwinku’s Aboriginal Medical Service, has received a primary care infrastructure grant worth $500,000.
"This funding illustrates the Gillard Labor Government’s ongoing commitment to improving Indigenous Health in Galiwin’ku and right across Australia”, Mr Snowdon said.
Mr Butler was in Darwin at the latest in a series of 14 nation-wide Mental Health Forums he has been attending as part of the Australian Government’s second term agenda to improve the mental health system under the National Health and Hospitals Network.
