Minister for Mental Health and Ageing Mark Butler today called for applications from groups and organisations seeking funding for projects that increase awareness of dementia in local communities.

Mr Butler said $1.5 million would be available for the fourth round of the Dementia Community Support Grants program, which is designed to encourage innovative local services for people with dementia, their families and carers.

“These grants will deliver activities that increase understanding of dementia in the community, help overcome the stigma of dementia, encourage social participation by people with dementia and provide support for grassroots dementia services,” he said.

“Funding of up to $50,000 will be available for projects of up to 12 months in duration. Priority will be given to those that target specific needs groups, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, culturally and linguistically diverse communities, people in rural and remote areas, those who are socially isolated and people with younger onset dementia.”

The previous three rounds of this program have provided $6.3 million for more than 150 projects.

Current projects include:

    • drama, art, music and radio projects;
    • projects connecting young people with people living with dementia;
    • reminiscence therapy activities; and
    • sensory gardens and men’s sheds.

The program is funded under the Australian Government’s Dementia Initiative, for which about $177 million has been allocated in 2010-11 to support people with dementia, their families and carers.

Mr Butler said 250,000 Australians have dementia‪, with one million more Australians affected by the condition, usually family carers.

“These grants will help improve services for people with dementia and provide valuable local jobs in the aged care sector,” he said.

Application forms and guidelines for the fourth round of the Dementia Community Support Grants are available on the Department of Health and Ageing web site at www.health.gov.au/tenders or by emailing dementiagrants@health.gov.au
