Minister for Mental Health and Ageing Mark Butler today visited Goodwin’s Ralph Cartwright Centre in Monash for the presentation of staff training awards and the turning of the first sod for a new residential aged care home.

Mr Butler said the 2010 staff training awards underline Goodwin Aged Care Services’ ongoing commitment to improve and support staff skills.

“Goodwin has a demonstrated track record in developing and retaining quality staff, having been awarded the national award for Excellence in Training and Staff Development (residential category) in 2009 in my predecessor’s Minister’s Awards for Excellence in Aged Care,” Mr Butler said.

“I note that Goodwin was also a finalist in the 2010 ACT Quality Healthcare and the Aged Care Association Employer of Choice Awards.

“The Australian Government is pleased to encourage programs such as these which improve the quality of care for aged Australians. They complement the work we are undertaking to provide a cutting-edge health and aged care system through our new National Health and Hospitals Network (NHHN).

“Under the NHHN the Australian Government will take full policy and funding responsibility for aged care, and become the sole funder of a nationally unified aged care system covering basic home care through to nursing homes.”

Mr Butler also congratulated Goodwin on turning the first sod at the Monash site for a new residential aged care home that will have 35 high-care and 31 low-care places.

“Goodwin is one of the largest and longest established aged care providers in Canberra and the development of this facility at Monash is the next chapter in the continuing expansion of their services across the ACT,” he said.

“The Gillard Labor Government is pleased to work with aged care providers in the ACT to provide quality aged care facilities and looks forward to the expected completion of this new facility at Monash in mid-2012.”

Mr Butler also congratulated Goodwin on being allocated 10 additional Community Aged Care Packages, 20 Extended Aged Care at Home packages and nine Extended Aged Care at Home Dementia packages in the 2009-10 Aged Care Approvals Round announced today.

In all, 91 new residential aged care places and 351 community care places have been allocated in the ACT in the round.
