$447.5 Million Boost to Medical Research
The Australian Government has announced $447.5 million for medical research, though the National Health and Medical Research Council.

Minister for Mental Health and Ageing Mark Butler today announced $447.5 million for medical research, though the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC).
Mr Butler made the announcement while opening two new research facilities at the Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute, which has been awarded 24 of the Project Grants worth $15.38 million over three to five years.
Baker IDI will also benefit from support funding of $3.43 million for IRIISS Grants and $225,367 for Equipment Grants.
“This level of success reflects the quality of the research carried out by Baker IDI, who won these grants in a very competitive environment,” Mr Butler said.
Seven hundred and forty-five research projects across Australia will be supported by NHMRC Project Grants, with funding of $408.7 million over three to five years.
Universities and independent research institutes will also receive $38.8 million toward the indirect costs of health and medical research, through NHMRC Equipment and Infrastructure Grants.
Mr Butler said: “Health and medical research is a key to the improved quality of life and life expectancy experienced by most Australians. It is also essential in attracting and retaining some of the brightest research minds to Australia.
“Today’s significant investment further demonstrates the Gillard Labor Government’s commitment to medical research and the health and wellbeing of all Australians.”
Researchers will conduct a range of studies, including investigating the link between pregnant women with low levels of vitamin D and the risk of having children who develop schizophrenia, and the effects of pain killer use for people with dementia.
