Federal Minister for Mental Health and Ageing Mark Butler, and ACT Minister for Health Katy Gallagher, today announced $1.3 million of additional services for people in the ACT whose capacity for independent living is at risk.

The services under the ACT Home and Community Care (HACC) Program – are jointly funded by the Commonwealth and Territory Labor Governments.

The HACC initiative provides a comprehensive, coordinated and integrated range of basic maintenance and support services to help frail aged people, people with a disability and their carers to remain living independently in the community.

“People want to remain independent, in their own homes and communities, close to friends and family for as long as they can,” Mr Butler said.
“This funding will help many people stay at home rather than move prematurely into residential care, providing the practical assistance that many older Australians need.”

Ms Gallagher said the HACC program provided services to more than 11,000 vulnerable people in the ACT.

“This boost in funding will assist seniors and people with a disability in the ACT to prepare for events like extreme weather conditions, at the same time enabling community organisations to put into action new ways of delivering HACC services,” Ms Gallagher said.

“This year additional HACC funds will enhance service provision for the most at-risk sections of our community. The additional services include case management, client care coordination, counselling/support information and advocacy, domestic assistance, meals, personal care, respite care and social support.

“The funds will also assist the purchase of a bus for community transport, and assistive technology, goods and equipment to enhance independent living in the home and community.”

The additional $1.3 million of funding in 2010 will result in the ACT benefiting from total HACC funding of $31.1 million with the Territory Government contributing $15.9 million and the Federal Government $15.2 million. This is an increase of 7.9 per cent on funding in 2009-10.
