Minister for Mental Health and Ageing Mark Butler today launched an innovative program supporting Tasmanians caring for people living with dementia.
Carer’s Care for dementia carers, including a self-help DVD, tip sheets and web support, was developed by Dr Jenn Scott, and is currently being trialled in Tasmania under Home and Community Care (HACC) funding.
The launch coincided with Dementia Awareness Week and a three-day Ageing and Community Services (ACSA) conference in Hobart, at which the Minister was a guest speaker.
“The Gillard Labor Government is committed to ensuring that carers are socially included, that their own health and well-being are protected, and that they enjoy the same opportunities for social and economic participation as all Australians,” Mr Butler said.
“Today, around 250,000 Australians have dementia impacting on a further million Australians, largely carers caring for family members.
“In our ageing society, it’s important that carers receive full support.”
Mr Butler told the ACSA conference that Prime Minister Gillard and Health Minister Nicola Roxon had identified aged care as a reform priority in the second term of government.
The Productivity Commission has been tasked with developing options for how the aged care sector might be reformed to meet the future needs of the population.
“The Commission is due to release its draft report in December 2010 and to present its final report to Government in April 2011, and I look forward to discussing the recommendations with the aged care sector,” Mr Butler said.
