Parliamentary Secretary for Health Mark Butler today announced the winning film in the Ecstasy. Face Facts short film competition. The prize was awarded to Thomas McKeith of Bondi, NSW.

Thomas will collect $10,000 in prize money for Stew for You, which was one of 138 entries, and voted for by the public. Five runners-up will each receive $1000.

The short film competition was a component of the Australian Government’s $17 million National Drugs Campaign: Illicit Drug Use – Targeting Young Methamphetamine Users initiative.

“The Australian Government remains committed to being tough on drugs and is providing some $359 million over four years in the health portfolio alone for prevention and harm reduction efforts against illicit drugs,” Mr Butler said.

“We are committed to the health and welfare of young people and Australian families.

“As part of the National Drugs Campaign, we asked the public to come up with messages asking young people to realise the consequences of illicit drug use, asking them to ‘face facts’ and understand the damaging effects drugs have.

“The winning film was just one of many outstanding entries produced by talented film makers.”

The current stage of the National Drugs Campaign aims to help young people and parents understand the harmful effects and consequences of drug use and to reduce the uptake of ecstasy, cannabis, methamphetamine (ice) and other illicit drugs among young Australians.

Using the Internet to display the competition entries and allowing the public to vote was an effective use of web 2.0 and a reflection of the implementation of the Government's 2.0 Taskforce Report. To view the winning entry, go to the competition website at www.facefactsfilms.com.au
