The Rudd Government today boosted the future of health in Western Australia by enhancing the long term sustainability of the State’s health workforce through increased training opportunities.
Up to $12.1 million will be provided to support additional clinical training places for health students at local universities ensuring they have access to top-quality facilities and the clinical training necessary to complete their qualifications.
The grants will fund training opportunities ranging from mental health training in private settings to multidisciplinary placements in remote general practices and rural hospitals.
In total, this $12.1 million funding boost will support approximately 2,200 additional annual clinical training placements for students currently enrolled in medical, nursing, psychology, social work, dental, pharmacy, podiatry, chiropractic studies as well as a range of other disciplines.
Among the institutions to benefit from this investment will be the University of Western Australia, which will receive up to $2.5 million to implement multidisciplinary clinical training placements in ambulatory and aged care settings across Perth.
This funding will provide for approximately 410 additional placements for medicine, nursing, social work, physiotherapy, pharmacy and other students, in conjunction with local health providers, North Metropolitan Health Service, Silver Chain, Brightwater Care Inc and the Curtin University of Technology.
Other institutions to share in the additional $12.1 million in funding for Western Australia under the Government’s Increased Clinical Training Capacity grants include Edith Cowan University, Pioneer Health Albany, and the Combined Universities Centre for Rural and Remote Health. Details are attached.
The Rudd Government is providing up to $67.5 million in Increased Clinical Training Capacity grants for 65 projects across Australia.
A key factor in the Rudd Government’s health reform plans is increased investment in training to tackle health workforce shortages, expand capacity and deliver a better health and hospital network.
