The Minister for Sport Kate Ellis will today inspect the Adelaide Superdrome, which is being revamped to improve facilities for Australia’s elite cyclists ahead of the Commonwealth Games.

Through the Australian Sports Commission, the Rudd Government has committed $310,000 to the upgrade to benefit Australian Institute of Sport cyclists training in Adelaide.

“The revamp includes a new recovery area with hot and cold baths and a room of ten stationary bikes to help coaches accurately measure athletes’ performance,” Ms Ellis said.

“It’s important that our elite cyclists have high standard facilities and equipment to help them be the best they can be on the world stage, especially in the lead up to the Commonwealth Games.

“The new training and recovery facilities mean that Australia’s elite track cyclists can use top grade facilities equal to that of their international rivals,” Ms Ellis said.

The Australian track cycling team, the Cyclones, recently topped the medal tally at the World Championships in Denmark.

“Our experienced cyclists and up-and-comers did Australia proud at the Championships and it’s a great sign of even bigger things to come at the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi this year and the 2012 London Olympics,” Ms Ellis said.

“Australia is one of the world’s leading track and road cycling nations and the Rudd Government is keen to ensure that our athletes remain a force to be reckoned with.”

Since 2006/07 the Australian Sports Commission has provided almost $24 million to cycling, including through the AIS scholarship program.

“That investment is bearing fruit, with 17 of the 18 athletes in the Australian World Championship team benefitting from an AIS scholarship.

“With continued investment, the Rudd Government and the AIS are helping to make dreams come true for World Champions like Anna Meares, Cameron Meyer and Jack Bobridge,” Ms Ellis said.

The Cycling Australia-AIS High Performance Program uses the Adelaide Superdrome as a base for all track cycling disciplines. The track program has been based in Adelaide since 1987, and has operated from the Superdrome since 1993.
