The Minister for Sport Kate Ellis today announced $590, 700 for Netball Australia to tackle illicit drug use with community awareness and elite athlete education programs.

The first education sessions have been run with players, coaches, administrators and umpires at the DealsDirect.com.au 17/U and 19/U National Netball Championships in Adelaide, which culminates in the grand final today.

“Netball is the first sport to receive funding under the Rudd Government’s $20.1 million Illicit Drugs in Sport grant program and I welcome their leadership,” Ms Ellis said.

“We know that sport is an important tool in changing behaviours and reducing the number of people that take potentially lethal and illegal drugs.

“High profile netballers will help fly the flag for this program to divert people away from the dire health and social consequences of illicit drug use,” Ms Ellis said.

“It’s really important that our sporting role models take a stand and set an example on an important issue like drug use.”

Netball Australia will run community awareness and elite athlete education programs over the next three years at elite and junior competitions across Australia.

“This is the first time that Netball Australia has been able to run an illicit drugs awareness program, thanks to support from the Rudd Government,” Netball Australia CEO Kate Palmer said.

“Netball Australia takes a strong stance against illegal drug use, as well as the use of performance enhancing drugs, so it’s great we can now push that message more widely.”

“This action aims to equip young women to make sound life decisions and perform at their best at their sport and in their lives,” Ms Palmer said.

More than 1.2 million people play netball in Australia and the sport is ranked as the most popular women’s team sport in Australia for 15 – 24 year olds.

The grant program is part of the Rudd Government’s $20.1 million Illicit Drugs in Sport Action Plan aimed at addressing illicit drug use in the community by using positive sports role models to deliver education and prevention initiatives. The Action Plan also provides support for elite sports to address drug use within their own ranks.

National sporting organisations are encouraged to apply for funding under the Illicit Drugs in Sport grant program for education, testing and results management programs.
