The Minister for Sport Kate Ellis today paid tribute to the contribution of outgoing Australian Sports Commission Chair Greg Hartung.
“Greg Hartung has led the Australian Government’s peak sporting agency since 2008 and has done an excellent job amid a changing sporting landscape,” Ms Ellis said.
“Mr Hartung is a founding father of the Australian Sports Commission, having helped establish the organisation in 1984 and serving as its inaugural General Manager and later its Commissioner.
“Mr Hartung is a leader in national and international sports administration and we’re fortunate to have benefitted from his talents over many years.”
President of the Australian Paralympic Committee for 12 years, Mr Hartung was appointed last year to the esteemed position of Vice President of the International Paralympic Committee.
“Mr Hartung’s dedication to sport, and particular achievement in promoting elite sport for those with a disability, has contributed to a well-run and inclusive sporting environment in Australia,” Ms Ellis said.
“I thank him for his service and join with those who’ve worked with him to wish him all the best in the future, as he continues his great contribution to sport,” she said.
Greg Hartung officially finishes as ASC Chair on April 4.
The Minister has appointed ASC Board member David Gallop as the Acting Chair with Alisa Camplin to continue as Deputy Chair.
Mr Gallop has been a member of the ASC Board since 2008, leading the Board’s Active After-School Communities Committee and Remuneration Committee.
He has been CEO of the National Rugby League since 2002 and Secretary of the Rugby League International Federation since 1998.
“I welcome Mr Gallop to the position and I’m confident that his extensive experience will ensure that strong leadership of the ASC continues.”
Mr Hartung will also retire as Chair of the Australian Sports Foundation. Alisa Camplin has been appointed to Chair the ASF.
Permanent appointments will be announced shortly with the Government’s response to the Independent Sports Panel report.
