Minister for Sport Kate Ellis has congratulated the Australian Men’s Hockey Team after winning their first World Cup title in 24 years.
The Kookaburras beat Germany 2-1 in the final played in New Delhi, India. Germany has beaten Australian in their two previous World Cup tilts.
“This was a great performance and a great win for the Kookaburras. Australia also walks away from the 2010 World Cup as the top scoring team, scoring 27 goals over the tournament,” Minister Ellis said.
“My congratulations also go to Australian Luke Doerner, the tournament’s equal top goal scorer, with 8 goals.”
This trophy adds another highlight to Ric Charlesworth’s outstanding coaching record, which already holds 2 Olympic Gold medals (1996 and 2000) when Ric was the coach of the Australian women’s hockey team. Ric now becomes only the second person in the world to win the World Cup as a player and a coach.
This win is a significant step and an all-important confidence boost for the Australian team’s preparations for both the New Delhi Commonwealth Games and the London Olympic Games in 2012.
“My congratulations to all the team on this fantastic result. I can’t wait to see the Kookaburra’s follow up on this win and bring home the gold in Delhi late this year.”
