Minister for Ageing Justine Elliot welcomed the Productivity Commission’s release of the Issues Paper for its public inquiry into the future of Australia’s aged care system.
The Caring for Older Australian inquiry will set out further structural reforms for Australia’s aged care system, future workforce requirements including the development of options to ensure the sector has access to a sufficient and appropriately trained workforce, regulatory arrangements, the interests of special needs groups and the path for transitioning from current arrangements to a new system without an interruption to care.
Minister Elliot said: “The Productivity Commission’s inquiry will develop detailed options for redesigning Australia’s aged care system, building on the Rudd Government’s commitment to take full policy and funding responsibility for aged care.
“Australia has an ageing population and by 2050 nearly one-quarter of the population will be aged 65 years or older so it is important that we make sure that we have a system of care in place to meet this increasing demand.
“Australia’s aged care system provides targeted, affordable and high quality care and it is important to ensure that it is equipped to meet care needs into the future.
“I encourage older Australians, their carers and families, aged care service providers, staff, consumer and training organisations to contribute to the inquiry and have their say on the future of the Australia’s aged care system,” Minister Elliot said.
Initial submissions to the Commission are due by 30 July 2010.
Further information on the inquiry, including information on how to make a contribution, and copies of the Issues Paper can be found on the Productivity Commission’s website at www.pc.gov.au or by contacting the Commission on (02) 6240 3223.
The Commission will release its draft report in December 2010 and provide a final report to the Government in April 2011.
