Minister for Ageing Justine Elliot and State Member for Ipswich West, Wayne Wendt today announced a $672,000 funding boost for Home and Community Care (HACC) services in Queensland.

Home and Community Care (HACC) delivers affordable and accessible care to help meet the individual needs of older people, people with a disability and their carers to help them remain living independently. It is jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland governments.

Minister Elliot and Mr Wendt, representing State Minister for Disability Services, Annastacia Palaszczuk, made the announcement with Federal Member for Blair, Shayne Neumann at Ipswich City Council, which will receive a further $36,400 to help an additional 37 people in the Ipswich region receive home modifications.

The Rudd and Bligh Governments will provide $672,000 in funding for 28 organisations throughout Queensland to provider home modification services such as the installation of handrails, ramps, handheld showers and emergency alarms.

This funding boost includes extra support for:

• $150,000 - St Vincent de Paul Society Queensland Home Modification & Maintenance Program;
• $60,000 - Maryborough/Burnett/Cooloola Districts Home Assist Secure;
• $86,800 - Toowoomba Community Housing Service Inc;
• $7,800 - Mt Isa Community Development Association Inc; and
• $7,375 - Far North Queensland Home Assist/Secure.

Minister Elliot said: “The home modification program provides practical assistance allowing people to remain independent, in their own homes and communities rather than moving prematurely into permanent residential care.”

Last year more than 163,000 people in Queensland benefited from services provided through the Home and Community Care program.

Mr Wendt said: “I’ve seen the benefits this program delivers. It makes a real difference to the lives of people in our community who need help with everyday living.”

The West Moreton region, which includes Ipswich, is estimated to have 14,774 people aged 70 years and over.

Member for Blair Shayne Neumann said: “Our region has an ageing population and providing practical services like home modifications is very important to older people and people with disabilities in our area.”

This year the Rudd and Bligh Governments will provide $429 million in funding for Home and Community Care services in Queensland, an 11 per cent increase on funding provided last year.
