Minister for Ageing, Justine Elliot today toured the construction and building works underway at Mt Gambier’s Boandik Lodge that will increase the number of aged care places in Mount Gambier.

The $2.9 million project is being assisted by an $800,000 Zero Real Interest Loan from the Rudd Government.

The expansion, which is expected to be completed in May, will accommodate an additional eight residents, in 18 single rooms with ensuites. The upgraded facility will also have a lounge room, dining room and activities area.

Eight new construction jobs have been created and it is expected an additional six full time equivalent staff positions will be required at the facility once completed.

The Rudd Government introduced the $300 million Zero Real Loans Initiative to support aged care providers, through low cost finance, to establish or expand aged care services in areas of high need.

Minister Elliot said: “It is an exciting time for an organisation that has been providing services for 54 years. It was great to be able to speak with the management, staff and residents at Boandik Lodge and to see that the expansion is getting closer to completion.

“The Zero Real Interest Loans initiative is a practical and commonsense way that the Government can assist in the expansion of services to areas of need like Mt Gambier.

“This community, like many parts of Australia, is facing the challenges of an ageing population.”

“In addition to the jobs created in the construction phase, this facility will provide an ongoing boost to the local economy by creating more jobs in the aged care sector,” Minister Elliot said.

The Rudd Government is making more than $150 million in Zero Real Interest Loans available to aged care providers as part of a package of capital support provided as part of this year’s aged care approvals round to support further construction and investment.
