Member for Longman

16 February 2010

Minister for Ageing Justine Elliot was today joined by the Member for Longman, Jon Sullivan, at the opening of the $14.5 million refurbishment and expansion of the co located Bribie Island Retirement Village and Bribie Island Aged Care Services.

The extensive renovation, refurbishment and extensions will allow for the accommodation of an additional nine residents, bringing the total number of places at the homes to 111.

An important part of this investment was the construction of a new 20-place dementia wing.

The planning and construction activity employed 30 constructions workers and 10 consultants.

“Today’s official opening is an important event for Bribie Island. It is a significant commitment by Churches of Christ to the future of aged care services on the island,” Minister Elliot said.

“In addition to the jobs created during the planning and construction phases, this service also provides valuable local jobs in the aged care sector.

“I congratulate the staff and management at Churches of Christ Care for their hard work in redeveloping this facility,” Minister Elliot said.

The redevelopment has allowed for new lounge areas, staff facilities, a library, a hair dressing salon, a community centre and chapel, and a new front entry and foyer.

Member for Longman Jon Sullivan said, “Like many parts of Australia, Queensland is facing the challenges of an ageing population and the electorate of Longman is no exception.

“Bribie Island in particular has long been a popular retirement destination for Queenslanders and people from southern states.

“The Rudd Government is planning for the future by making more services available for more older Australians.

“It is important that services are available in all locations when people need to leave their homes and enter aged care,” Mr Sullivan said.

The Rudd Government is providing more funding for more services to more older Australians than any previous Australian government.
