Minister for Ageing, Justine Elliot today presented training awards to 85 aged care workers from Goodwin Aged Care Services in Canberra.

Minister Elliot said: “A skilled workforce improves the standard of care provided to residents and ongoing up skilling programs help providers retain their workforce.

“The Rudd Government is committed to building a health workforce for the future and has invested more than $135 million to create more than 21,600 training places for aged care workers.

“We know that up-skilling the aged care workforce helps aged care homes continue to provide high quality care to frail and elderly residents,” Minister Elliot said.

Of the 85 recipients, 42 training qualifications were funded under the Rudd Government through the Better Skills for Better Care, Community Aged Care Workforce and Dementia Care Essentials programs.

Goodwin Aged Care Services received the 2009 Minister’s Awards for Excellence in Training and Staff Development’ and were highly commended in the ‘Innovation in Staff Recruitment and Retention’ in the residential care category.

Goodwin Aged Care Services was recognised for its:

• Training incentive payments;
• Management and leadership programs that encourage staff to pursue training;
• Development opportunities;
• Flexible working arrangements;
• Qualifications allowance; and
• An apprenticeship and traineeship scheme.

Minister Elliot said: “We have first class aged care facilities in Australia. The innovation and dedication of aged care providers and their employees to continually seeking new and creative ways to provide even better care is commended.

“Nurses, personal carers and allied health workers are the backbone of Australia’s aged and community care system. It is important that their efforts are recognised and applauded.

“Their commitment to excellence is evident in the quality of training and support they provide to their staff” Minister Elliot said.

Goodwin is one of the largest and longest established aged care providers in Canberra and each year cares for hundreds of older Canberrans through their residential and community care services.
