Minister for Ageing, Justine Elliot, was today joined by representatives of the Ingham Health Research Institute (IHRI) to officially sign the $46.9 million funding agreement to construct a new research facility at Liverpool Hospital.

The funding was made available through the Rudd Government’s $430 million Health and Hospitals Fund.

Minister for Ageing Justine Elliot said: “This is an investment in research and an investment in South Western Sydney.

“This facility will be a research hub, housing 340 researchers.

“Australia is one of the world leaders in research and the IRHI will continue to contribute to important medical research and breakthroughs benefitting our country and others,” Minister Elliot said.

The research groups associated with IHRI have already:

  • Created the medical emergency teams (MET) now used in hospitals around the world;
  • Proved home visits by nurses improve outcomes in disadvantaged families; and
  • Were the first to discover the role of stellate cells in pancreatic cancer.
The new facility will be linked to other research facilities at the hospital including the Cancer Therapy Centre and Clinical Skills Centre to assist in the translation of research findings into clinical practice.

The design brief and site investigations for the four storey building are now completed with construction expected to begin soon.

The Minister’s visit to Liverpool Hospital was part of the Government’s national consultation program following last year’s release of the National Health and Hospitals Reform Commission (NHHRC) report.

The NHHRC report made 123 recommendations for system-wide changes to Australian health care to improve Australia's health, hospital and aged care systems.

The Rudd Government has engaged in a conversation with the nation to road-test the National Health and Hospitals Reform Commission’s recommendations.

Minister Elliot said: “Hearing first hand what doctors, nurses and other health professionals think of the NHHRC recommendations will help shape the future of health and aged care system.

“We have already taken concrete steps to improve Australia’s health and hospital system after twelve years of neglect by the previous government,” Minister Elliot said.

All Australians can contribute their views on the future of our health, hospitals and aged care systems through the yourHealth website located at http://www.yourhealth.gov.au.

Work on the construction of the research facility will commence shortly.
