Highly skilled public servant Ms Yael Cass is to head up the Australian Organ and Tissue Donation and Transplantation Authority from 5 February 2011.
Parliamentary Secretary for Health and Ageing Catherine King announced today that Ms Cass, currently First Assistant Secretary for Social Policy at the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet, had been appointed as the authority’s new Chief Executive Officer for five years.
“Ms Cass will bring valuable experience to the CEO role at a significant time in the work of the authority which is starting to turn around Australia’s relatively low number of organ and tissue donations by global standards,” Ms King said.
“Her credentials include overseeing PM&C’s health reform team where she has been closely involved with the Department of Health and Ageing and with Treasury negotiating the 2010 COAG National Health and Hospitals Network Agreement.”
The Australian Government’s $151 million reform package to boost organ and tissue donation rates announced in July 2008 is aimed at significantly increasing and sustaining organ and tissue donor numbers leading to increased access to transplants for people needing them.
Ms King said that as of 30 November 2010 there were 290 organ donors who had helped to achieve the highest number of life saving and life changing transplants in Australia’s transplant history.
“I am confident the track record of the Australian Organ and Tissue Donation and Transplantation Authority will continue under Ms Cass who brings a valuable blend of senior government leadership, public sector policy and governance skills, experience in health and collaboratively working with a wide range of stakeholders,” she said.
Ms Cass succeeds the outgoing acting CEO, Ms Elizabeth Cain. “I would like to thank Ms Cain for her leadership of the authority during 2010 and acknowledge the improvements achieved in organ donation rates during this time,” Ms King said.
