Business improvement and corporate governance will be the main topics of discussion during a two-day conference beginning today in Sydney for Indigenous health organisations from across NSW.

Opening the ACTION for Health conference: Innovations for Business Improvement 2009 today, Federal Minister for Indigenous Health, Warren Snowdon, said Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations should gain a lot from the conference.

“Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations have been at the forefront of developing innovative and local approaches to comprehensive primary health for Indigenous Australians,” he said.

“Nonetheless the complexities and requirements of delivering efficient and effective health services evolve over time, and accordingly, the skill set of an organisation's management and governance teams need to do the same.

“The discussions here over the next two days will help ensure these organisations are working at their best to deliver comprehensive health benefits to their communities.”

The conference is conducted by the Aboriginal Health and Medical Research Council of NSW, the peak body for 60 Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations in the state.

“The Rudd Government is committed to building the capacity of the Aboriginal community controlled health sector to provide services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people,” Mr Snowdon said.

“Under the Rudd Government, funding provided to Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services to provide primary health care, substance use, mental health, and social and emotional well-being services, has increased from $243 million in 2006-07 to $308 million in 2008-09, an increase of 27 per cent.

“The Rudd Government, in partnership with state and territory governments, has put in place a huge reform agenda for Indigenous health to help close the gap.

“Innovation in business and service delivery is a means to making that happen.”
